History
Sirius Black was born in July of 1960 to Orion and Walburga Black. The older of two sons, he was the heir to the Black family fortune. Despite this, at the age of eleven, Sirius began schooling at Hogwarts and became one of the only members of the aristocratic family to ever be sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin. Sirius defied his family's ideas that pure blood wizards were superior and that muggles were to be scorned.

At Hogwarts, Sirius found a group of friends who became better family than the one he'd left back home. He, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and Remus Lupin became practically inseparable, and Sirius and James's charming personalities and constant pranking earned the group a fair amount of popularity with their schoolmates.

In their second year, the friends discovered a dark secret about one of their own: Remus Lupin was a werewolf. Distressed to know of the pain he went through at each full moon, the group vowed to help him. By their fifth year, they had mastered the Animagus spell and each could turn into an animal at will, allowing them to safely keep Remus company in his wolf form. Sirius's animagus, a shaggy black dog, earned him the nickname Padfoot and also allowed him to escape Azkaban later in life. With the knowledge they gained of the Hogwarts grounds during their monthly romps, the four boys created the Marauders' Map, which Harry received many years later.

At fifteen, Sirius could no longer endure the prejudices of his parents, and despite worrying about his younger brother Regulus, he ran away from home. He was disowned, and his name was magically burned off the tapestry displaying the Black family tree. For a time, he lived with James and the Potter family, until he bought a house with money left to him by his Uncle Alphard.

After graduation, the Marauders joined the Order of the Phoenix to assist in fighting the Dark Lord Voldemort and his followers. It wasn't long before James Potter and Lily Evans decided to get married and have a child. Sirius was the best man at their wedding, then became godfather of their son Harry. For their protection from Voldemort and his followers, the Potter family went into hiding, making Sirius their Secret Keeper.

Unbeknownst to anyone but the Potters, Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius himself, at the last moment, Sirius decided it would be too easy for the Death Eaters to figure out he was the one to go after. He therefore demanded that Peter be the Secret Keeper, unaware that Peter was working for Voldemort. On October 31st, 1981, Voldemort murdered Lily and James Potter. When Sirius went after Pettigrew in a rage, Pettigrew managed to frame him both for his staged murder, and the deaths of thirteen muggles and the Potters. Sirius was sent to life in Azkaban without a trial.

Thanks to his Animagus form, Sirius managed to remain sane in the face of Dementors and the horrors of life in Azkaban, and even escaped his prison twelve years later. He made his way to Hogwarts, where he was reunited with his friend (and earlier in life, more than friend) Remus Lupin and his godson. He was able to explain the truth of what had happened, but Pettigrew escaped again, leaving Sirius without proof of his innocence and forcing him to find freedom by escaping the law on griffin-back.

For some time, Sirius ended up living with Remus while he hid from the law. Then, when the Order of the Phoenix started up again, he offered his childhood mansion 12 Grimmauld Place to use as the headquarters and moved back there. Unable to show his face in the outside world or do anything useful for the Order, Sirius became extraordinarily antsy and depressed.

When he found out his godson was in trouble at the Ministry, he jumped at the chance to join in the fight. Unfortunately for him, his first time participating in the war's action became his last. While engaged in a magical duel with his own cousin Bellatrix, he was hit by a stunning spell which sent him flying through a mysterious black-veiled archway. Once through the veil, Sirius realized that he had died.
